Divorce rocked everything I thought I knew about God. Despite my best attempts to live a godly life, I lost my husband, family life, in-laws, social status, financial security and church ministry. My deepest question, the one thing my survival depended on, I asked daily: “Where is God in this?” I cried out to him in desperation during the 3 ½ years it took for my divorce to become final and I daily recorded my anger, grief and fear in my prayer journals. (They resemble a toxic dump much more than a collection of prayers.) At the time of writing, I often felt lost, afraid and overwhelmed. But as I looked back through them to write these 12 Bible studies, I saw patterns, steps, even a logical progression that God had brought me through. In my deepest confusion, he always stayed the course. I’ve done my best to mirror his steps in this book. The tremendous advantage is that what took me 3 ½ years, boils down to 12 lessons once you know the course. That’s because I’ve eliminated the months of being stuck and not knowing why, and the many rabbit trails that promised me goodness but never delivered. These are the steps that worked: the ones that led me from death to life. Although this detour isn't easy, I can promise you that God is in it, and that finding him changes everything. My prayer is for women to experience his leading in these pages, and emerge knowing the One who is their way, their truth and their life. I wrote this book during some of the most painful months of my divorce. As I look back I see God’s wisdom and kindness in that timing. Having the project kept my eyes on him when everything else seemed to be falling apart. Not surprisingly, the people who have appreciated it the most, have been those who also needed God’s comfort, assurance, and soothing touch in the midst of their pain.
