Christian Vacation Family Camps

What Can a Single Mom Do for Vacation?

If You Want a Christian Vacation,
but you:

--hate camping
--have a limited vacation budget
--want a place both you and your kids can enjoy
--don’t want to cook or pay to eat out
--long for spiritual refreshment

Consider a Christian family camp.

My first vacation as a single mom led me to search for better options. Not yet clued into the family camp option, I decided to take my 2 sons (ages 9 and 11) to D.C. Since all the museums were free, it fit my budget perfectly.

CALL IT TEMPORARY INSANITY: Somehow I forgot that my boys bounce around museums like pin balls on crack. As if going for a record score, we saw money-printing, Ford theatre, the FBI, Washington monument and one very, very large flag all in one day. Each museum proved more interesting than the last. My sons were definitely gaining momentum, and I was losing control (if I ever had it).

Near the end of one day, we found ourselves on a crowded train platform unable to decide where to go next. The train had stopped and opened its doors but my nose was buried in brochures. I vaguely heard the automatic recording in the background saying “Please stand back. The doors are about to close” while I fumbled with the train schedule. Passengers pushed by us, anxious to get home. That’s when it happened.

Still high on brain candy, my oldest heard me say, “I think we want this one” and crammed his way in before I added, “No. Let’s not do that today.” My other son had squeezed in behind him, narrowly escaping being crushed by the closing doors. Now both my sons were staring out at me in disbelief from inside the glass. Horror-struck I yelled, “Get off at the next stop!” before they were whooshed away.

And then I prayed, like I’ve never prayed before. My two kids were in D.C. on their own! As I waited for the next train my palms began to sweat. “C’mon! Come on!” I imagined everything that could go wrong. I wondered if the next train made the same next stop, if my kids would get conned by a stranger, what my ex would say, and even, what his lawyer might do to a mother who lost her children in D.C. “C’mon! Come on!” Finally, I arrived at the next stop. I saw my kids standing on either side of a stranger, still looking a little dazed. A business-man who had seen what happened had gotten off with them. “I didn’t want to leave until you came,” he said graciously before disappearing into the crowd.

We continued our sightseeing for another few days, but by the end of the week, I remember thinking,”Oh, Lord, I need a vacation!”

Since then I’ve looked for less stressful ways to take a vacation.
